Troubleshooting

Fix it yourself in a few minutes

Most problems come down to a permission, a pause, or a suggestion drawn in the wrong place. Work down this page. Anything it can't fix ends with a way to reach us.

Start here

Three quick checks clear most cases. Open the TypeSeer menu from the menu-bar icon at the top of your screen.

  1. Is permission granted? The bottom of the menu says so. If it reads a warning about Accessibility, that is the answer. See Permissions below.
  2. Is the model ready? The menu says Model: ready when it is. If it is still downloading, suggestions arrive when it finishes.
  3. Are you in an ordinary text field? Suggestions appear as you type, near-instantly. Some fields are skipped on purpose, like passwords and search boxes. Try Notes or Mail to check.

Permissions

TypeSeer needs one permission to work: Accessibility. It lets TypeSeer read the box you are typing in and place a suggestion there. macOS will not grant it without you.

  1. Open the TypeSeer menu and choose Open Accessibility Settings. It takes you straight to the right place.
  2. Find TypeSeer in the list and turn it on.
  3. If you turned it on while TypeSeer was running, give it a few seconds. It notices on its own, with no restart.

The menu shows Accessibility as granted once it is sorted. Nothing works until this is done.

If TypeSeer was there before and stopped working after an update, turn it off and on again in that same list. A new version sometimes needs the permission re-confirmed.

One more permission is optional. If you turn on reading what's on screen in Settings → Context, macOS asks for Screen Recording. It is only for that feature, and TypeSeer works fully without it.

No suggestion appears in an app

After the checks above, work through these.

It may be switched off where you are

A bar through the menu-bar icon means TypeSeer is off where you are standing. Open the menu. The top line names the reason, and the row beneath it turns that off again.

  • Off everywhere. Turn On TypeSeer brings it back.
  • Off in this app. You, or a setting, turned it off for this one app.
  • Off on this site. In a browser, it can be off for one website. A rule covers a whole domain, so a rule on example.com also quiets mail.example.com. The full list lives in Settings → Apps.

Some boxes are skipped on purpose

These silences are meant to happen.

  • Password fields. TypeSeer never reads them or suggests in them.
  • Address bars and search boxes. These already complete themselves with the Tab key. Two sets of suggestions fighting over one key helps nobody.
  • Web addresses, email addresses and file paths. TypeSeer stays quiet while you are inside one, so it cannot rewrite part of an address. Finish it with a space and suggestions return.

Put the cursor at the end

A suggestion carries on from where you are. When you are editing in the middle of a line, it appears just below the cursor instead of after it, so it never covers the words that follow. If you see nothing, try typing at the end of a line.

Check your trial or license

If the trial has ended, the menu says so and suggestions are off until you add a license. See Trial and license.

Apps TypeSeer can't read

A few apps draw their own text onto a canvas rather than using a standard macOS text box. There is nothing there for the Accessibility interface to report, so no system-wide tool of any kind can read them. This is a limit of the app, not a setting.

Known examples today are Sublime Text and OneNote. In these, suggestions will not appear and there is no fix from TypeSeer's side.

Google Docs is the exception. It draws text the same way, but you can give TypeSeer the words:

  1. In the document, open Tools → Accessibility.
  2. Turn on Turn on braille support and click OK.

Suggestions start working straight away, including Tab to accept. It is safe to leave on. It changes a few keyboard shortcuts inside Docs and nothing else.

When TypeSeer meets an app it cannot read, the menu bar says so rather than going quiet, so you are never left guessing. If an app you rely on is affected, tell us which app and field. Some cases look like this and turn out to be fixable.

The suggestion is in the wrong place

Some apps describe where your cursor is less precisely than others, so the grey text can sit a little high, low, or to one side. You can move it yourself, and it stays moved.

  1. Open the TypeSeer menu and choose Calibrate Suggestion Position.
  2. Go to the app with the problem and get a suggestion showing.
  3. Line it up with Control Option and the arrow keys.
  4. Make it bigger or smaller with Control Option + and Control Option .
  5. Choose Save Adjustment. TypeSeer draws it there in that app from then on.

Adjustments are kept per app and per text size, so line it up once, then check again at a different size. Settings → Apps lists everything you have adjusted and can undo any of it.

Doubled or overlapping suggestions

If a suggestion looks doubled or smudged in a native app like Mail, you are seeing two at once. macOS draws its own grey suggestion at the cursor, and it lands on top of TypeSeer's.

Turn Apple's off and only TypeSeer's remains. Open the TypeSeer menu and choose Turn Off Apple's Own Suggestions. It asks first, because this changes a system setting. Apps already open carry on until you quit and reopen them.

You can also change it yourself in System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit… by turning off Show inline predictive text.

The model

TypeSeer writes its suggestions with a model that lives on your Mac. The menu shows its state.

  • Still downloading. The built-in model is about 3.5 GB. On a slow connection this takes a while. Suggestions begin when it finishes. You only wait once.
  • Out of disk space. The download needs room to land. Free some space and it resumes.
  • A faded menu-bar icon. The model is starting up or downloading. It clears on its own.

TypeSeer needs an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14 or later. It does not run on Intel Macs.

Trial and license

During the trial the menu shows how many days are left. When it ends, suggestions turn off until you add a license. Paste your key in Settings → License.

If a key won't activate, you need to free up a Mac, or you want a receipt, write in from the address you bought with and we will sort it.

Send us a diagnostic log

If we ask for a log, it captures what's on screen while you reproduce a problem, not the text you type. The easy way is in the TypeSeer menu: Troubleshooting & Support, then Record a Diagnostic. It records while you reproduce the problem, then attaches the log to a message for you. The full guide, including the manual way, is here.

Still stuck?

Anything this page can't fix, we want to hear about. The quickest way is Troubleshooting & Support in the TypeSeer menu. Write a message, or record a diagnostic, and it sends from inside the app, with no mail app to open.

Contact support

Tell us which app you were in, what you were typing, and what went wrong. A diagnostic log helps most.
