Speak instead of typing, on your Mac

Press a key, talk, and TypeSeer types what you said where your cursor is. It can also type it in another language as you speak. It all happens on your Mac.

How it works

  1. Press ⌃⌥D and talk. Press it again when you’re done. Or hold the keys down while you speak and let go at the end.
  2. Watch your words appear. What TypeSeer hears shows as grey text at your cursor, so you can see it before it’s typed.
  3. Take it, or carry on. The keys that accept a suggestion accept your words too, a word or all at once. The cancel key clears them and you keep speaking.

It works in the same apps as TypeSeer’s suggestions: Mail, Notes, Slack, your browser and most others.

Speak one language, type another

Pick a language under “Type it in”, and TypeSeer translates as you speak. The grey text shows the translation, and each Tab types the next finished sentence. Translation happens on your Mac too.

Switching often? Press ⌃⌥L for a quick list of the languages that are ready, for what you speak and what it’s typed in.

Private, and works offline

  • Your voice is turned into text on your Mac, by the speech recognition built into macOS.
  • Translation runs on your Mac, with Apple’s own translation languages.
  • Your Mac downloads each language once, from Apple. After that, dictation works with the internet off.
  • TypeSeer never records or keeps what you said. The Privacy page has the details.

Who it helps

  • Long emails and notes. Most people speak about three times faster than they type.
  • Sore wrists. Give your hands a break without stopping work.
  • Writing in a second language. Say it in the language you think in, and send it in the one your reader needs.

How it differs from the dictation in macOS

macOS has dictation built in, and it’s good. TypeSeer’s shows what it heard as grey text before typing it, uses the same keys as your suggestions, and can translate while you speak. Use whichever suits you. They don’t get in each other’s way.

What you need

  • macOS 26 or later.
  • TypeSeer for Mac. Turn on dictation in Settings → Experimental.
  • Microphone permission. macOS asks the first time.
Dictation is experimental. It works, and we use it every day, but it’s still changing. Tell us what you think through Troubleshooting & Support in TypeSeer’s menu. Dictation isn’t in TypeSeer for Windows yet.
