A PhraseExpress alternative with AI autocomplete
PhraseExpress is a long-standing snippet app, strongest on Windows and in offices. TypeSeer is AI autocomplete for Mac and Windows with snippets built in. Both sell a license you buy once.
We make TypeSeer, so read this with that in mind. PhraseExpress does far more with snippets than TypeSeer does. The question is whether you need that, or would rather have help with everything else you write.
The short answer
Keep PhraseExpress if your snippets use macros, scripts or Word formatting. Choose TypeSeer if most of your snippets are plain text and you’d like AI suggestions for everything else you write, in the same app on Mac and Windows.

Where TypeSeer is the better choice
- Most of your writing isn’t a snippet. TypeSeer suggests how your sentence could go on, as grey text at your cursor. Press Tab to take it. It learns your words if you turn that on.
- You want it simple. Snippets live in one Settings pane. There are no editions to compare.
- You use a Mac. TypeSeer is the same app on Mac as on Windows, and the Mac also gets dictation and translation.
- You want suggestions that stay on your computer. TypeSeer’s model runs on your Mac or PC.
Where PhraseExpress is the better choice
- Your snippets are small programs. Macros, scripts, database lookups and conditional forms are what PhraseExpress is for. TypeSeer has none of these.
- You need Word formatting in your snippets. TypeSeer types plain text.
- You need snippets on your phone. TypeSeer runs on Mac and Windows only.
- You use it at home and it’s free for you. TypeSeer is paid after 14 days.
- Your IT team runs it on SQL Server. TypeSeer for Business is still in beta.
Moving your snippets to TypeSeer
PhraseExpress saves phrases in its own file format, which TypeSeer can’t read. Copy the snippets you use most into a spreadsheet: the shortcut in the first column, named “trigger”, and the text in the second. Save it as CSV.
In TypeSeer, open Settings → Snippets, click Import Snippets…, and choose the file. Then rewrite any fill-ins with TypeSeer’s placeholders.
How to decide
Open your PhraseExpress library and count the snippets that are just text. If that’s most of them, try TypeSeer for a week on your own writing. If your work depends on the macros, keep PhraseExpress.
Questions
Can TypeSeer import PhraseExpress phrases?
Not directly. PhraseExpress saves phrases in its own format. Copy the ones you use most into a CSV file, with the shortcut in the first column, named “trigger”, and the text in the second. Then use Import Snippets… in Settings → Snippets.
Can I buy TypeSeer once?
Yes. There’s a $79.99 lifetime license, as well as monthly and yearly plans.
Does one TypeSeer license cover Mac and Windows?
No. Each has its own license, at the same price. A license covers two Macs, or two PCs.
Does TypeSeer have macros?
No. TypeSeer snippets type text, with placeholders for the date, the time, the clipboard, the cursor and fill-in fields.
