TypeSeer and Apple Writing Tools, compared
Apple Writing Tools work on text you’ve already written. TypeSeer helps while you’re still writing it. They do different jobs, so most people who like one keep both.
We make TypeSeer, so read this with that in mind. We’ve tried to be fair to Apple, whose tools are free and already on your Mac.
What Apple Writing Tools do
Select some text and Apple Writing Tools can proofread it, rewrite it in another tone, or summarise it. They come with Apple Intelligence. Most requests run on your Mac. Some larger ones go to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which Apple designed so your data isn’t kept.
macOS also offers inline predictive text: a short grey suggestion of a word or a few words in many native apps.
What TypeSeer does
TypeSeer suggests the rest of your sentence as grey text while you type, in almost any app. That includes browsers, Slack, Teams and other apps Apple’s predictions often don’t reach. Press Tab to take a word, or the key above Tab to take it all.
- It reads the message you’re replying to, so suggestions fit the conversation.
- It can learn how you write, from sentences you finish, and you can see everything it learned.
- It follows you between languages, with spelling fixes in each.
- Snippets, one-Tab spelling fixes and word completion are built in.
- Every suggestion is written on your Mac. Nothing goes to a server, not even Apple’s.
Where Apple is the better choice
- It’s free and already on your Mac.
- Summaries. TypeSeer doesn’t summarise.
- Rewriting long documents. Writing Tools are built for it.
Where TypeSeer is the better choice
- Writing faster. Writing Tools fix text after you write it. TypeSeer saves keystrokes while you write.
- Older Macs. TypeSeer runs on macOS 14 and later. Apple Intelligence needs a newer macOS.
- Your languages. TypeSeer’s suggestions don’t depend on which languages Apple Intelligence supports.
- Windows too. There’s TypeSeer for Windows, for the PC at work.
Using both
They don’t clash. TypeSeer’s own Rephrase and grammar checking even use Apple Intelligence on your Mac. The one thing to change: macOS’s inline predictions and TypeSeer’s suggestions can overlap in apps like Mail. TypeSeer’s menu has Turn Off Apple’s Own Suggestions for that.
