A TextExpander alternative with AI autocomplete

TextExpander is a snippet app. TypeSeer is AI autocomplete for Mac and Windows with snippets built in. If snippets are most of what you use TextExpander for, TypeSeer may cover them and finish your other sentences too.

We make TypeSeer, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to write the page we would want while deciding. That includes the places where TextExpander does more.

The short answer

Choose TypeSeer if most of your snippets are plain text and you’d like AI suggestions for the rest of your writing, on Mac or Windows, with a license you can buy once. Choose TextExpander if you need snippets on your phone, scripts or nested snippets, or its free plan.

Try TypeSeer free for 14 days, with no account and no card.

What TypeSeer’s snippets do

  • A trigger and Tab. Type ;addr, press Tab, and your address is typed. Or turn on “Expand without pressing Tab” in Settings → Snippets.
  • Placeholders. {date} and {time} in any format, or shifted, like {date+7d}. {clipboard} for what you copied. {cursor} for where you keep typing.
  • Fill-in fields. {input:Name} asks for a name before the snippet is typed.
  • No trigger needed. Start typing a snippet’s own text, like “Best re”, and TypeSeer offers the rest.
  • Snippets you didn’t know you needed. Text you type often is offered as a new snippet.
  • Undo. Press Backspace right after a snippet to get your trigger back.
  • Sync. Keep your snippets the same on your Macs and PCs. Everything is encrypted on your computer before it reaches the shared folder.
  • Edit, search and export. Settings → Snippets shows how often you use each one.

What TypeSeer adds

Snippets cover the text you type the same way every time. Most writing isn’t like that. TypeSeer also suggests the rest of your sentence as grey text at your cursor, and you press Tab to take it. The model runs on your own computer, so your writing isn’t sent anywhere to be finished.

  • Suggestions that fit the message. TypeSeer can read the email you’re replying to.
  • Spelling fixes, even in apps with no spell checker of their own.
  • Dictation and translation on Mac, on macOS 26 or later. See dictation.
  • A license you buy once. TextExpander’s paid plans are subscriptions.

Where TextExpander is the better choice

  • You need snippets on your phone or iPad. TypeSeer runs on Mac and Windows only.
  • Your snippets use scripts, nested snippets or conditional fill-ins. TypeSeer has none of these.
  • Your Mac has an Intel processor. TypeSeer needs Apple Silicon to run its model.
  • Five snippets are enough for you. TextExpander’s free plan doesn’t expire. TypeSeer is paid after 14 days.
  • Your team already runs on it. TextExpander’s team sharing is mature. TypeSeer for Business is still in beta.

Moving your snippets to TypeSeer

  1. In TextExpander, export your snippets as a CSV file.
  2. In TypeSeer, open Settings → Snippets and click Import Snippets….
  3. Choose the file.

TextExpander’s cursor, clipboard and date codes become TypeSeer’s own. Other fill-ins and scripts come in as plain text, so check those snippets after importing. A trigger you already have in TypeSeer is left alone. A trigger with a space in it is skipped.

Import also reads Raycast’s and Espanso’s exports, and macOS Text Replacements.

How to decide

Import your snippets into the TypeSeer trial and use it for a week of normal work. It needs no account and no card. If you find you never miss TextExpander’s extras, you have one app instead of two. If you do miss them, you’ve lost nothing.
